  • Who may use the Library?

While any member of the public (18 and older) may visit the Library, only currently enrolled Compton College students may check out materials from the circulating and Reserves collections, access the databases, borrow a study room, and use the computer lab.

Currently employed Compton College faculty and staff may check out materials from the circulating and Reserves collections, as well as access the databases.

  • How do I get a library card?

Your current Compton College student or employee ID card is your library card. The first time you checkout a book, please show a government-issued picture ID to staff at the Circulation Desk. Library staff will need to input your card into the computer system.

  • How many books may I checkout?

Up to six books (print or electronic) may be checked out.

  • How long may I borrow books?

Circulating books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed once. Textbooks may be checked out for one hour, limited to in-library use.

  • Is there a fine for overdue books? What happens if I lose a book?

The Library does not normally charge for overdue books. However, if you checkout a book and do not return it, you will have to pay for the entire cost of the book. If you have paid for a book and then find it, return the book in satisfactory condition for a refund.

NOTE: If you have overdue books you will not be able to checkout new books from the Library and may not be able to enroll in new classes.

The Library has a small computer lab containing eighteen computers. This lab is restricted to use for library orientations, library 101, and students taking online classes. • How do I search for a book?

Use the Library's online catalog to find print and electronic books. In the search box, type the title, author, subject or ISBN you are looking for. The call number shows where the book will be located on the shelf. Please ask a librarian for help at the Reference Desk if needed.

  • How do I search for a magazine, newspaper, or journal article?

Use the Library's online databases to find articles from magazines, newspapers and journals. Academic Search Complete or ProQuest Research Library are recommended for those new to database research.
