Sociology
The sociology degree provides students with a foundation in the science of sociology. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, the student will acquire an understanding of major sociological concepts and theoretical perspectives on social problems and social life as they apply to the individual, group, and society.
Social Sciences - Guided Pathway Division
The sociology degree provides students with a foundation in the science of sociology. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, the student will acquire an understanding of major sociological concepts and theoretical perspectives on social problems and social life as they apply to the individual, group, and society. Students will also understand the principles of research methods and data analysis. The major prepares students for transfer to four- year colleges and universities as part of preparation for careers in sociology or related fields such as teaching, research, social work, public relations, and counseling. Students will demonstrate their proficiency in sociological competencies through examinations and writing assignments on the major sociological theories, topics of sociological study, and research techniques.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the degree program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of theoretical perspectives and apply sociological perspectives such as functionalism, conflict theory, and interactionism to social scenarios.
- Define and demonstrate an understanding of sociological concepts, such as social structure, culture, socialization, deviance, and social stratification by applying them to social scenarios.
