President/CEO Message

November 5, 2021

Campus Community,

I was unable to finish my President/CEO Message yesterday because I was at a UC Irvine event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the UC Irvine Center for Educational Partnerships. And today, I attended a portion of the Tartar Success Team Mini Institute, and I finally found the time to finish the President/CEO Message this afternoon. As we concluded the 11th week of the fall 2021 semester, I want to thank the faculty, Classified Staff, and managers/supervisors for all your hard work and dedication in support of student success at Compton College. The President/CEO Message - November 5, 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's Daily COVID-19 Data webpage reports 1,829 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County as of 6 p.m. on November 4, 2021. For more information, go to publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/data/. As of November 4, 2021, 80.2% of Los Angeles County residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine; and 72%  are fully vaccinated. For detailed vaccine information, including individual city data, go to publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/coronavirus/vaccine/vaccine-dashboard.  Compton College is operating at Level 3 - Moderate Infection Rate according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

2021 Compton College Tartar Football Update

The active team roster for football has been decreasing over the course of the fall 2021 season due to health and safety issues. This past Saturday, several players were injured, including our only remaining quarterback and most of our wide receivers and linemen. After much discussion, the decision was made to cancel the remaining two games of the season (November 6 and November 13).

Mobile Food Pantry On-Campus - November 9, 2021

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Compton College have partnered together to provide FREE healthy food to our community. Next week on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., the public is invited to stop by Compton College (enter from Greenleaf Blvd. between Santa Fe Ave. and Long Beach Blvd.) to pick up a box of free food. This is a drive-thru-only event, and no walk-ups are permitted. Due to limited supplies, food will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis. For more information, click here. Please share this information with those who could benefit from the generous assistance.

Sixth Annual CARE for Kids Holiday Celebration

The Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) program provides education and career services to low-income and academically underprepared students, who are single parents. The CARE program is requesting your help in supporting our Sixth Annual CARE for Kids Holiday Celebration. To help put a smile on our CARE students’ children’s faces this holiday season, we are asking for monetary donations from the Compton College campus community. All donations will be truly appreciated!

Please send your donation to the Foundation for the Compton Community College District, Attn: Gloria Hughes, 1111 E. Artesia Blvd., Compton, CA 90221. For more information, please contact Libby Martinez, EOPS/CARE Coordinator at lmartinez@compton.edu. We will be accepting donations through November 29, 2021.

Visual and Performing Arts Project Update

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - June 24, 2021 and the President/CEO Message - July 26, 2021, the Visual and Performing Arts Project scope will demolish three existing buildings in the Y area and construct a new one-story building to house music, theater, and dance. Struere has been selected as the architect for this project. The overall approved project budget is $11.7 million. Final Thoughts

Registration for the winter term began on November 2, 2021. Another registration reminder will be sent to all current students in a couple of weeks, reminding them of the January 1, 2022 deadline to submit proof of vaccination and an announcement of the new $350 student incentive to meet the vaccine requirement. Details on the incentive will be provided in future President/CEO Messages.

The vaccine incentive was initially discussed in the President/CEO Message - October 4, 2021, and President/CEO Message - October 25, 2021

California community colleges' enrollment continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, as noted in the November 4, 2021, EdSource article "California community college enrollment drops below 2 million students, more than previously reported." As I have said before, enrollment is everyone's responsibility, and we need to encourage current students to register for the next semester and recruit new students. The Office of Educational Partnerships can provide campus tours, information sessions, and enrollment services workshops with advance notice. Compton College employees may submit a request for Outreach Services online here.

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - September 20, 2021, Institutional Effectiveness developed a survey to collect information from employees regarding classes students are interested in that are not being offered at Compton College for a particular term. The survey is available here. Please complete the survey to request classes students may need that are not provided at Compton College for a specific term.

Please be sure to remind students that in-person services are available on-campus, including assistance with registration and financial aid, tutoring, Library services, and the bookstore. Click here for more information and the hours and services available. Most resources are available on a walk-in basis; no appointment is required.

In closing, Yesterday, November 4, 2021, we hosted the Virtual University Transfer Fair. Over 50 college/university representatives attended, and California State University, Dominguez Hills, provided a financial literacy presentation for students. Special thank you to the Virtual University Transfer Fair planning committee, including Theresa Barragan-Echeverria, Citlali Gonzales, Rosa Carrillo, Desiree Corona Ramirez, and Beatriz Sapiens Nunez. Student participants will receive an UberEats card and will be entered into an opportunity drawing for a laptop and Apple air pods.

Please be safe and have a wonderful weekend,
