President/CEO Message

April 15, 2021

This afternoon I had the opportunity to represent Compton College at the California Community Colleges' Courageous Leadership webinar alongside Compton Community College District Board of Trustees President Sonia Lopez; Kevin Quincy Jones, Compton College student; Tina Kuperman, Director of Diversity, Compliance, and Title IX; Dr. Minodora Moldoveanu, Academic Senate President; Lauren Sosenko, Director of Institutional Effectiveness; and Pilar Huffman, Professional Development Manager. We discussed diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, what it means to support one another in our work, and how we have exercised courageous leadership at Compton College. We also utilized the Sketch Effect to bring the stories and presentation to life in a visually compelling way. I am amazed at what we have accomplished thus far and excited for what is yet to come as we continue toward our vision of being a leading institution of student learning and success in higher education.

The President/CEO Message - April 15, 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's current risk level is Orange Tier (moderate), according to California's "Blueprint for a Safer Economy." On April 14, 2021, there were 411 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County. The county now has a total of 1,226,964 reported cases (including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena Health Departments). For more information, go to http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/data/index.htm. Due to a confirmed COVID-19 case on campus, Compton College is operating at Level 4 - Severe Infection Rate according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Safe Return to Campus

As we continue to prepare for the eventual reopening of the campus, I wanted to provide you with an update on the planning process. First, the Eventual Return to Campus Plan has been renamed the Safe Return to Campus Plan, and our goal is to provide the updated plan to the campus community next week. In the President/CEO Message - April 1, 2021, I shared my decision regarding fall 2021 instruction, and I mentioned that the Child Development Center would open to serve employees and current students on Monday, April 19, 2021. I also announced that managers/supervisors would begin reporting to work on campus two days per week. We are also finalizing plans to provide limited in-person Enrollment Services, by appointment only, to students beginning the week of Monday, May 3, 2021, in Tartar Village.

The Maintenance and Operations Department has been focused on the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems on campus. Many employees have shared their health and safety concerns regarding ventilation in some areas on campus. A master report of all HVAC systems' status and capabilities is in progress. We will provide the report on the Compton College COVID-19 webpage when it is finalized.

Next week, we will be sharing the results from the Compton College Safe Return to Campus Survey with the Consultative Council and the Health, Safety, and Parking Committee. I will also include the survey results in my President/CEO Message – April 22, 2021. I truly appreciate the time and consideration many of you put forth when completing the survey. Your feedback is very helpful. We will continue to provide information on the Safe Return to Campus in future President/CEO Messages.
