Overview

Read&Write (R&W) is literacy software with tools designed for reading, writing, study, and research support. It has reader software that works with library articles, websites, and alternate format textbooks.

R&W also includes speech-to-text to assist with typing and OCR capabilities for scanned articles or inaccessible websites.

Features include:

  • Web pages and documents read aloud to improve reading comprehension with a choice of natural voices
  • Understanding unfamiliar words with text and picture dictionaries
  • Developing writing skills with word prediction
  • Support independent student research with valuable study skills tools

The floating toolbar has a variety of options that can be used with many programs. Note: most of the features support Word and PDF documents.

Downloading Versions of Read&Write

Desktop Floating Toolbar

The desktop version of R&W can be accessed from a Windows or Mac. Compton College has a domain license for R&W.  Users sign in with their compton.edu email address and password.

Students  can download the Windows  version of R&W via Read&Write Windows Desktop Version (Links to an external site.).

Students can use R&W to read textbooks and handouts aloud with different speeds and voices, use built-in study tools like highlighting, sticky notes, and dictionary. A floating toolbar will sit on screen and can be used to interact with programs like Microsoft Word and Adobe Reader.

 

Google Chrome Extension

The Google Chrome extension provides personalized support, making documents, navigating web pages and files (including PDFs & ePub) more accessible. For use anywhere, anytime and on any device, this discreet toolbar can help everyone engage with digital content in a way that suits their ability and learning style.

Features:

  • Text-to-speech lets you hear words, passages, or whole documents read aloud with easy-to-follow dual color highlighting.
  • Text and picture dictionaries give easy word definitions and sentence examples
  • With speech-to-text, dictate words to assist with writing, proofreading & studying.
  • Convert PDFs to Word, and have them read aloud
