Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO

Campus Community,

Although it was another full day of Zoom meetings, it was a very productive day. Today's President/CEO Message - May 13, 2020, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update
As of May 12, 2020, there are a total of 71,141 positive cases and 2,934 deaths in California. For more information, go to www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019. Compton College remains operating at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Multi-factor Authentication for Microsoft Office 365
To improve security for all Compton College Microsoft 365 accounts as we continue to work remotely, ITS will be enabling multi-factor authentication (also called 2-step verification) to all @compton.edu user accounts. The process will begin with managers/supervisors in June 2020, Classified staff in July 2020 and August 2020, and faculty accounts during the fall 2020 semester. More information on the Multi-factor Authentication for Microsoft Office 365 will be provided in future President/CEO Messages, including the timeline for implementation and Zoom training dates.

Compton College + Everytable Meal Delivery Program
On average, 109 free meals are picked up each week by Compton College students at the Compton Everytable location. Current spring 2020 students may pick-up one free meal per day, compliments of the Compton College + Everytable partnership. Since March 23, 2020, 150 meals have been available each week (Monday-Friday). Please remind students to take advantage of this free food. All they need is their current Compton College student ID card or a copy of their spring 2020 class schedule and a valid photo ID. Details, including hours of operation, are available here.

Reminder, Compton College employees can participate in the Everytable Employee Meal Delivery Program - $59 for ten meals, including delivery. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday evenings at midnight. Compton College employees can order and pay for the Everytable Employee Meal Delivery Program online here.

EAB Partnership
Compton College has a partnership with EAB Global, Inc. (EAB) to provide research, insight, and actionable advice for student success. EAB is a research and technology company that helps schools support students from enrollment to graduation and beyond. Working closely with the Compton College, EAB will seek to inform thinking, build consensus, and contribute to the execution of Compton College 2024, Comprehensive Master Plan. Also, all faculty, staff, and administrators across campus have access to EAB's website and can utilize any practice, tool, or webinar.

Instructions for how to register for the EAB website (www.eab.com), is available here. We are offering a 30-minute webinar on Friday, May 15, 2020, at noon. Please contact Pilar Huffman at phuffman@compton.edu for any questions regarding EAB.

Achieving the Dream
Compton College has been accepted into the 2020 Cohort for Achieving the Dream National Reform Network. More information on Achieving the Dream is available here. Achieving the Dream is a national network of more than 220 colleges in 41 states dedicated to helping more community college students, particularly low-income students and students of color, stay in school and earn a college certificate, diploma, or degree. Joining the Achieving the Dream network will provide Compton College with Pathways Coaching by leveraging Achieving the Dream's expertise in coaching, advising the College on building and implementing guided pathways for student success, and provide guidance for improvements for teaching and learning in the classroom, specifically in math and English. The Kresge Foundation has awarded Compton College with a grant for $112,500 to help support our three-year participation in Achieving the Dream. We have our kick-off meeting with Achieving the Dream, scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2020, at 8:00 a.m.

Final Thoughts
Tomorrow, May 14, 2020, I, along with many others, are waiting in anticipation of Governor Gavin Newsom's May Budget Revision as we brace for the unknown. Today, I reviewed the following Guiding Principles for the Compton Community College District Budget Planning Process that was developed in 2011-2012.

  1. Student learning and student success is key to every recommendation/decision.
  2. As we will not be able to offer the same number of programs and class sections, nor the same level of student support services, reductions will be achieved by assessing all programs and services for their viability, relevance, cost-effectiveness and ability to meet community needs.
  3. Remaining programs and student support services will be of high quality and appropriately supported.
  4. All efforts will be made to create and support revenue-generating opportunities.
  5. We are creating a dynamic, flexible organization that can easily adapt as future changes to our State's economy unfold.

In spring 2011, which was my first semester as the interim CEO, I had to make some difficult financial decisions, which resulted in a reduction of our workforce, and not a year goes by that I do not think about spring 2011.

We will develop the Compton Community College District Guiding Principles for the 2020-2021 year and share them with the Planning and Budget Committee at their Tuesday, May 26, 2020, meeting at 1:00 p.m. I will be looking for creative ways to balance the 2020-2021 Compton Community College District Budget with the understanding that future year budgets could be affected by this recession.
