Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO
With 11 weeks until the end of the 2018-2019 academic year, this is the time Compton College begins preparations for our year-end celebratory activities. Spring semester mid-term classes begin Saturday, April 13, 2019, so please encourage students to add/register for a class if they need to fulfill requirements to meet their educational goals. The best way to find classes with seats available is to use the searchable class schedule.
There are a variety of noteworthy upcoming events happening this semester in addition to year-end celebrations. First, on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, the Compton Community College District will host its second annual Retirees Luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Staff Lounge.
Then, we will mark another significant milestone in facilities improvements on campus with a grounding breaking ceremony for Instructional Building 1 on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the northern end of campus near the row buildings' demolition site. Parking will be available in Lot F off of Greenleaf Avenue.
And, on Thursday, May 30, 2019, Compton College and El Camino College cordially invite
faculty and staff to celebrate the historic partnership that ensured continuous access
to college programs and services, and led to Compton College's independence as a fully
accredited college. The celebration will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Gymnasium
and will include refreshments and live entertainment. If you have not already RSVP'd

Compton College is working on implementing the items cited in the plans section of the ECC Compton Center Self-Evaluation Report and implementing the recommendations for improvement cited in the External Evaluation Report. The plans section and recommendations for improvement are documented and monitored on the Compton College Institutional Self-Evaluation Action Items document.
Also, work continues on implementation of the projects associated with the Compton College Quality Focused Essay- Special Report that was submitted to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) on November 22, 2017.
Finally, future Accreditation Steering Committee meetings have been scheduled. Attendees
at these meetings include representatives from faculty, staff, and management, as
well as the co-chairs of each Compton College Accreditation Standard committee. The
next Accreditation Steering Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17,
2019, at 3:00 p.m., in the Compton College Board Room. The goal is to begin working
on the Compton College Mid-term Report to ACCJC during the 2019-2020 year, in anticipation
of submitting the report before the March 15, 2021 deadline.
El Camino College/Compton College Transition
There are only a few months left for the El Camino College/Compton College Transition Committee to implement all of the items cited in the updated Partnership Transition Plan, which is the internal planning document for the El Camino College/Compton College Transition. The next El Camino College/Compton College Transition committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. in the Compton College Board Room.
The Compton College Ellucian Banner Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system went live in January 2019, and the Compton College summer and fall 2019 CCCApply Applications went live in February 2019. The updated Compton College Ellucian Banner ERP system implementation timeline is available here.
We are asking for your help in reminding Compton College students to complete their
Authorization and Consent to Release Student Educational Records by the Monday, April
1, 2019, deadline. As of March 18, 2019, more than 4,000 students completed the Authorization
and Consent to Release Student Educational Records form. By submitting the online release form, Compton College students will not have to re-apply to Compton College to continue
taking classes after the transition from El Camino Community College District. Compton
College counselors and the Admissions and Records Office will have access to their
academic history, making it easier to assist students as they progress through their
academic program. Also, the Compton College catalog is targeted to be completed by

2019-2020 Compton College Goals
As a part of the annual Compton College Budget Development Process, we established
the 2019-2020 Goals for the organization. These goals will guide the Budget Development Process and institutional
planning for the 2019-2020 year. The 2019-2020 Goals were approved by the Consultative
Council on Monday, March 12, 2019 and shared with the Board of Trustees on Tuesday,
March 19, 2019.
Renaming of College Promise Program
At its February 19, 2019 regular Board Meeting, the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees honored Oliver W. Conner's memory and financial contributions to Compton College by renaming the Compton College Promise Program to the Compton College Oliver W. Conner Promise Program. This change is consistent with Compton District Board Policy 3320 - Naming of Buildings and Administrative Regulations 3321- Criteria for Naming Buildings and Other Facilities. The financial contribution will support the book program for College Promise students from Compton, Lynwood, and Paramount unified school Districts.
On Tuesday, April 16, 2019, Compton College will host the Oliver W. Conner College
Promise Program luncheon at noon in the Library-Student Success Center Art Gallery.
The purpose of the luncheon is to introduce the Oliver W. Conner family to the Compton
College administration, Compton College Promise staff, as well as our partners from
Compton, Lynwood, and Paramount unified school districts. The luncheon will kick-off
fall 2019 recruitment for the Compton College Oliver W. Conner Promise Program.
Enrollment Management Update
For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, Compton College's Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) goal is 5,980, and we will not meet the enrollment goal as shown in the Five-Year FTES projections. However, with the implementation of the Student-Centered Funding Formula, pg. 82-83 and the transition from El Camino Community College District, Compton College funding for the 2018-2019 year will be the 5,980 FTES amount plus the cost-of-living adjustment identified in the annual Budget Act and adjusted for increases to FTES.
We are currently in the process of adding additional courses to the spring 2019 second eight-week session, which begins on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Compton College will continue to monitor its Five-Year FTES projections and is currently developing of the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan, which will be linked to the Institution-Set Standards and the Foundation for California Community Colleges Vision for Success report. The 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan will be completed sometime in spring 2019.
Dual Enrollment is a key strategy for supporting enrollment that will be included in 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan. Compton College offers different types of dual enrollment in local K-12 school districts, including:
- AB288 (series of college courses that lead to an identified guided pathway, during the regular school day).
- Early College (college courses during the school day in grades 9-12 at the Compton Early College school, with the intent of achieving an associate degree or completing the requirements for admission to the University of California system).
- Afternoon College (College courses offered at the high school site after the regular school day).
The Dual Enrollment numbers have more than doubled since fall 2016 and totaled 1,418
enrollments in fall 2018. Dual enrollment course success was 75 percent in fall 2018.
The Compton College Institutional Research Department has developed the Dual Enrollment Tableau Dashboard to explore Compton College's Dual Enrollment student demographics and success.
Compton College Hiring
In February 2019, Compton College began the recruitment process for the following new faculty positions for the 2019-2020 year:
- Counselor/Articulation Officer
- Automotive Technology (roll-over from the 2018-2019 year)
- English as a Second Language
- EOPS/CARE Guided Pathways Counselor
- Guided Pathways Counselor (5 positions)
- Nursing (2 positions)
- Special Resource Center Counselor/Guided Pathways Counselors (2 positions)
These positions close on Thursday, March 28, 2019. Compton College hosted an on-campus
Job Fair on March 9, 2019 for faculty, vacant classified and management positions
at Compton College. There were 248 individuals who participated in the event, which
included opportunities to meet with faculty and staff, and resume writing and interview
Annual Northern California University Tour
The Compton College Northern California University Tour is coming up on April 8-11,
2019. The goal of the University Tour is to increase transfer students' awareness
of different major options; knowledge of transfer admissions eligibility requirements;
and introduce them to some of the institutions of higher education in Northern California.
Student participants will have the opportunity to visit the following six universities
in Northern California: UC Merced; UC Davis; UC Berkeley; CSU Stanislaus; San Jose
State; and UC Santa Cruz. The Compton Community College District will provide accommodations,
food, and transportation for participating students.
California Community College #RealCollege Survey Report
The California Community College #RealCollege Survey Report was recently released by The Hope Center and the California Community College Chancellor's Office. Below are some of the survey results:
- A combined 52 percent of students said they either couldn't afford to eat balanced meals or worried whether their food would run out before having money to buy more.
- Forty-one percent of respondents reported that they skipped meals or ate smaller portions for financial reasons, and 12 percent said they had not eaten for an entire day during the previous month because they did not have enough money.
- Sixty percent of survey respondents said that in the previous year they had experienced housing insecurity, which includes an array of challenges that include an inability to pay rent or utilities, not having a place to stay or needing to move frequently.
- Homelessness, defined as not having a stable place to live, affected 19 percent of survey respondents. The majority temporarily stayed with a relative or friend or couch surfing.
- Thirty-two percent of students said they experienced a rent or mortgage increase that was difficult to meet, 28-percent could not pay the full cost of utilities, and 28 percent could not meet their full rent or mortgage obligations.
- Overall, 7 in 10 students responding to the survey experienced food insecurity or housing insecurity or homelessness during the previous year.
Compton College participated in the #RealCollege California Community College Survey, and below are our results compared to the statewide averages:

The Compton College full #RealCollege Survey Results will be available sometime in spring of 2019. Compton College is a leader in the California Community College system addressing housing and food insecurity of our students.
In the past two years, Compton College established the Tartar Support Network to address
enrolled students' basic needs. The Tartar Support Network has implemented the Tartar
Food Pantry and has developed procedures to provide students with a place to shower
on campus. At its March 13, 2018 Compton Community College District Board of Trustees
meeting, the Board of Trustees approved Resolution # 03-13-2018A - Support for Student Residential Housing. The Tartar Support Network is working with Gensler Architecture to further develop
a plan for implementing and funding student housing at Compton College.
2019 Distinguished Faculty and Outstanding Adjunct Awards
Nominations are open for the 2019 Distinguished Faculty and Outstanding Adjunct awards. Honorees will be recognized at the Compton Community College District Board meeting scheduled on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. Nomination forms may be obtained in the Human Resources Office.
Nomination forms were also emailed to all faculty and staff. The forms outline the
nomination process and identify awards to be given to the selected nominees. The deadline
for submission of nomination to Human Resources is Friday, April 5, 2019.
