Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO

March 2018


Compton College has a lot of great events planned during the spring semester! Our Black History Month observance will end in March with a Book Fair on March 13-14 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and March 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Student Lounge. There is a Career and Majors Fair coming up on March 21 in the Tartar Quad and the second annual Tartar Success Student Leadership Conference is scheduled for April 5.

The summer 2018 class schedule is now available online here. The first six-week and eight-week summer sessions begin June 18 and the second six-week session begins July 2. Summer registration appointment information will be available for students via MyECC beginning May 7.

Accreditation Update

Following the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) approval in January of the Compton College Quality Focused Essay special report, we are now focused on submitting a substantive change proposal to the ACCJC. The substantive change proposal will request that the Compton Community College District assume authority over Compton College. Our goal is to submit the substantive change proposal to the ACCJC by June 1, 2018.

In addition, the accreditation Midterm Report for Compton College is due to the ACCJC by March 15, 2021, and the next comprehensive review will occur in spring 2024. This spring, we will begin the planning for the Compton College Midterm Report with an Accreditation Standards Co-Chairs meeting in March. Faculty and staff that are interested in serving on an Accreditation Standards Committee should contact Amber Gillis, Accreditation Faculty Chair, ext. 2322.

El Camino College/Compton College Transition

A decision has been made regarding the purchase of the ERP System/SIS needed for student information/registration, Human Resources, and for all related financial items at Compton College. At their February 20 board meeting, the Compton District Board of Trustees approved a contract with Ellucian for the Banner ERP system.

The 2017-2018 California State Budget included $11.3 million in funding to the Compton District to support Compton College's transition to an accredited institution under the authority of the Compton District Board of Trustees. Included in the funding was $4.1 million for the purchase of a new ERP system/SIS for Compton College. Also, in the 2017-18 Compton District Final Budget, the Compton District included $1 million for the new ERP System/SIS.

The goal is to have the Compton College ERP System/SIS fully implemented by spring 2019. The Compton College Banner ERP System implementation timeline is available online here.

In addition, the recommendation has been made that Compton College utilize the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) PeopleSoft system for budget, requisitions, purchasing, and accounts payable. The goal is to implement the PeopleSoft system for the 2018-19 fiscal year. The Compton District currently contracts with LACOE for the Human Resource System and financial modules including payroll, general ledger and Position Control Products supporting database software. The Compton District has a contract with LACOE as an interface type of District and pays LACOE the minimum cost of $20,000. Below is the Compton District's current cost for LACOE services and our estimated future cost including budget, requisitions, purchasing, and accounts payable:

The purchase of the ERP System/SIS is a key component that Compton College has to implement before we can separate from the El Camino Community College District. The El Camino College/Compton College Transition Committee has been working together on implementing items cited in the Partnership Transition Plan document, which is our internal planning document for the El Camino College/Compton College Transition. The next El Camino College/Compton College Transition committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3, at 2:30 p.m. in the Compton College Boardroom.

Enrollment Management: Every FTES Counts!

As of February 26, 2018, Compton College has generated 2,035 FTES for the spring 2018 semester. Compton College will continue to monitor our Five -Year FTES projections and our 2012-2018 FTES Projections and Actuals; and the implementation of the 2015-2018 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan.

Professional Development Day Presentation

2018 Tartar Success Student Leadership Conference: Leadership in Action

The second annual Tartar Success Student Leadership Conference is scheduled for Thursday, April 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Compton College students will hear from distinguished scholars, entrepreneurs, and community leaders about leadership "on the ground." The featured speakers for this year's conference are Kiana Webb, chief executive officer of Webb Family Enterprises, and Audrey Dow, senior vice president of Campaign for College Opportunity. The Tartar Success Student Leadership Conference is designed to motivate and inspire Compton College students. All participants will learn strategies to develop their roles as leaders at Compton College and in their communities. Students are asked to RSVP online at https://tinyurl.com/TartarSuccess.

Compton College faculty members are invited to participate in an informal and interactive session to gain insights on the impact of his or her teaching on student development. This session will be led by Paula Brown, co-coordinator for 3CSN's Equity Community of Practice and faculty member at Los Angeles Harbor College.

Compton College Residential Hall Study

The Compton Community College District is exploring options for building on-campus residential halls at Compton College by 2028. Based on the 2017 Compton College Comprehensive Master Plan, space is available at the northeast corner of the Compton College campus for a two-story, 540-unit residential hall. This location is near the new instructional buildings that are in the construction planning phase and a parking lot. The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office reports that of the state's 114 Community Colleges, 11 offer housing. Student housing ranges from traditional on-campus residential halls with access to shared bathrooms on each floor to apartment-style buildings on or adjacent to the campus grounds. Most of these colleges are in rural locations such as West Hills College in Coalinga, College of the Redwoods in Eureka, Cerro Coso College in Mammoth Lakes, and Shasta College in Redding. At the request of the Compton District Board of Trustees, that information, along with the Compton College Residential Hall Study prepared by Gensler Architecture was shared with local and federal elected officials.

California Community Colleges Vision for Success

The California Community Colleges recently published a document titled "Vision for Success: Strengthening the California Community Colleges to Meet California's Needs." The document was created to provide a clear, honest look at the California Community Colleges' performance as a system, both where they are excelling and where they are falling short. It establishes very clear goals for improvement. It also lays out a vision for success, framed as a series of seven commitments that the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office believes must be made to California and to California Community Colleges students in order to improve.
