Campus Community,

Today, I served as a presenter during the Community College League of California Chief Executive Officer Leadership Academy. The presentation was titled "Equity at the Heart of Guided Pathways," and the presentation is available here. I focused my portion of the presentation on our Guided Pathways implementation journey, which is on slides 5 through 7.

The progress from my initial email to the campus on May 26, 2017, announcing the formation of the Tartar Focused & Directed Pathways to Completion Task Force to the establishment of the Guided Pathway Divisions, and the implementation of the Tartar Success Teams is amazing! I am proud of our Guided Pathways work, and I want to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication to the implementation of Guided Pathways.

Compton College COVID-19 Update - June 25, 2020
As of June 24, 2020, there are a total of 195,571 positive cases and 5,733 deaths in California. For more information, go to www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019. Compton College continues to operate at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Essential Employees Schedule Update
As mentioned in previous President/CEO Messages, the Essential Employees Work Schedule will be updated and posted online here.

This week, Rachelle Sasser, Vice President of Human Resources, sent letters to the Essential Employees regarding our protocols and information on employee health screening requirements that will be in place for the protection of employees and the entire campus community. Faculty and instructional support staff who will be teaching/providing instructional assistance to Career and Technical Education (CTE) students completing spring 2020 lab requirements on campus during the summer, were also sent a letter from Rachelle Sasser. One of the requirements, effective July 1, 2020, is that all employees working on campus will be required to be tested for COVID-19.

Please note, as of today, June 25, 2020, Compton CCD is still awaiting guidance from state and local public health authorities confirming that CTE labs and classes may resume on campus. Although July 6, 2020, date is subject to change, we are planning in anticipation of that start date for the CTE labs and classes on campus.

Student Communications
Students were sent a reminder today via their @compton.edu email regarding available second six-week summer classes and student support and resources available for the summer term. All student emails are available online on the Student Information and Communications Webpage.

Summer Enrollment Update
As of today, June 25, 2020, Compton College has generated 508 Full-Time Equivalent Students for summer 2020. Our fill rate is at 70%, and our seats filled is 3,748. Click here for the current summer 2020 Enrollment Snapshot.

2020-2021 Compton Community College District
As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - June 22, 2020, at the June 16, 2020, Compton CCD Board of Trustees meeting, the Board approved the 2020-2021 Compton CCD Tentative Budget, which is available here. On June 22, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders reached an agreement around a final 2020-2021 state spending plan, and the budget includes the following:

  • For California Community Colleges, the 2020-2021 budget agreement prevents cuts to community college district general apportionments and categorical programs. To accomplish this, $1.45 billion in funding to colleges will be deferred to future years. Of the $1.45 billion, $791 million would trigger-off if Congress approves a fourth stimulus package.
  • Approves the May Revision proposal to extend minimum revenue provisions (hold harmless) under the Student-Centered Funding Formula by an additional two years. Please note, Compton CCD hold harmless provision is through 2025-2026.
  • No Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) and no enrollment growth.
  • Includes $120 million one-time from Proposition 98 and federal funds to support a basic needs/learning loss/COVID 19 response block grant to colleges.
  • Support expenses such as mental health services, housing and food insecurity, re-engagement for students who left college in spring 2020, technology and development of online courses, and student supports.
  • Protects against cuts to any categorical programs, the Strong Workforce Program, and Student Equity and Achievement, keeping the programs at 2019-2020 spending levels.
  • Creates a food pantry expense within the Student Equity and Achievement Program.
  • Provides $10 million ongoing support for immigrant legal services.
  • Provides $5.8 million ongoing to support Dreamer Resource Liaisons.

Good news! The Budget Trailer Bill Language includes extending the Compton CCD hold harmless provision through 2025-2026. During the 2020-2021 year, we will continue to advocate for the Compton CCD hold-harmless provision to be extended through 2028-2029. Also, the California State Budget includes funding for the Compton College Physical Education Complex. The Compton College Physical Education Complex will be a new construction project that includes the demolition of the current gymnasium, men's shower/locker, classroom V, pool service, pool, and women's shower/locker buildings; and the construction of a new gymnasium, men's and women's locker room, faculty office space, and physical education support space. The new construction cost is $46 million, $23.3 million from the state of California, and $22.7 million from Compton CCD Measure C Facilities Bond.

Over the next weeks, we will develop the 2020-2021 Compton CCD Final Budget Assumptions and are scheduled to present our assumptions at the Board of Trustees meeting on August 18, 2020. We will continue to keep the campus community updated on the development of the 2020-2021 Compton CCD Final Budget.

Distinguished Faculty Award
The Compton College Distinguished Faculty Awards honors one full-time faculty member each year. These outstanding faculty members have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to their students, college, and profession. In addition to excellence in helping students succeed, they have a record of outstanding participation on campus and in professional activities. Candidates are evaluated on the following:

  1. Serving students
  2. Commitment to the Compton College mission
  3. Campus, professional, or student activities
  4. Commitment to education and discipline
  5. Commitment to serving as a representative of the profession
  6. Commitment to exhibiting professionalism to staff, faculty, students, and the campus

Eyob Wallano, Professor, Biological Sciences, was selected for the 2019-2020 award and received a specially designed medallion; $500 from the Compton Community College District; and was recognized by the Board of Trustees on June 16, 2020.

Distinguished Staff Award
The Compton College Distinguished Staff Award is presented annually to a staff member whose contributions demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, professionalism, and outstanding service to Compton College and its students. Candidates are evaluated basis on a demonstrated record of:

  • service to students and Compton College
  • professionalism when working with employees, students, and the community
  • professional growth and/or community service

Annette Simmons, Mail Clerk/Switchboard Operator, Community Relations Department was selected for the 2019-2020 award and received a specially designed medallion; $500 from the Compton Community College District; and was recognized by the Board of Trustees on June 16, 2020.

Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award
The Compton College Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award honors one adjunct faculty member each year. These excellent faculty members have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to their students and teaching. Also, they show a commitment to the Compton College mission and campus, professional and/or student activities. The candidates are evaluated on the following:

  1. Serving students.
  2. Commitment to education and discipline.
  3. Commitment to the Compton College mission.
  4. Involvement in campus, professional, and/or student activities.

John Yeressian, Business, and Industrial Studies was selected for the 2019-2020 award and received a specially designed medallion; $250 from the Compton Community College District; and was recognized by the Board of Trustees on June 16, 2020.

Civility Champion Awards
The Civility Champion Award was developed to honor outstanding members of Compton Community College District, whose contributions demonstrate a commitment to self-reflection, care, empathy, and respect while acknowledging the culture and humanity of others. The Civility Champion Awards are being presented for the first time this year, and each recipient will receive $100 and were recognized by the Board of Trustees at the June 16, 2020 Board Meeting.

As stated in the Compton College's Statement of Civility and Mutual Respect, how we interact with one another is critical to cultivating and maintaining a meaningful and effective intellectual environment. We graciously thank the recipients for setting an example for the rest of the campus community and for their efforts in creating a civil and respectful space for all.
