Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO

April 10, 2020

Campus Community,

I want to provide you with an update on Compton College in terms of COVID-19. As of Thursday, April 9, 2020, there are a total of 19,472 positive cases and 541 deaths in California. For more information, go to https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019.aspx.

Compton College is currently operating at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan. The Compton College Pandemic Coordinators and members of the President/CEO Cabinet met today, and below are today's updates.

  1. As mentioned in the Compton College COVID-19 Update - April 6, 2020, Compton College will implement a new food-resource for students. Through the Compton College + Everytable Meal Delivery Program, currently enrolled Compton College students will be able to receive ten meals per week, delivered to their homes. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday evenings at midnight; the first deadline is Wednesday, April 15, 2020. If the list fills before the deadline, students will be placed on a waiting list for the following week. Students can sign up by submitting the Compton College + Everytable Meal Delivery Program Sign-Up Form This delivery service is in addition to the daily free meals, already available at the Compton Everytable location, Monday-Friday.

  2. Just a friendly reminder, beginning Monday, April 13, 2020, to protect our community and slow the spread of COVID-19, all essential employees and individuals scheduled to be on campus must wear a face covering and gloves. All essential employees will be provided with a mask and gloves by their immediate supervisor. The updated schedule for essential employees is available online here. The campus remains closed to visitors and the general public through Friday, June 12, 2020.

  3. As a follow-up to the Confirmed COVID-19 Case #2 at Compton College - April 9, 2020 email, areas in which the individual was known to have visited on campus, before testing positive for COVID-19, have been identified. We have contacted ServPro of Downey to provide Level 4 cleaning and disinfection services for those areas next week.

As noted in the Compton College COVID-19 Update - April 1, 2020, the District has implemented a communication protocol in the event there are confirmed COVID-19 case(s). I have asked the Pandemic Coordinators to review the protocols and make recommendations on how to proceed with the protocols, considering the District has been providing alternative academic instruction and student support services since Saturday, March 21, 2020.

  4. On Wednesday, April 8, 2020, I requested the Compton College Academic Senate to review the Grading Policies and Term Extension Guidance Due to COVID-19 Pandemic memo provided by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and to provide me with a formal recommendation by Friday, April 24, 2020, as it relates to implementing Pass/No Pass Grading Options for spring 2020 at Compton College.

  5. Spring Break is, Saturday, April 11, 2020, through Friday, April 17, 2020, and the campus is closed on Friday, April 17, 2020.

Final Thoughts
Please enjoy spring break and time with your family. As many of you reflect on the last couple of months, hopefully, you think about our many accomplishments as an accredited college, providing valuable services to our students and community. I wanted to share with you an email I received from one of our student workers after they were notified they would be paid for their scheduled hours through Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

"I just want to thank you and all Compton College staff for all the support and information you are giving us. I know everyone is going through difficult times right now and you have more work in your hands. I want to appreciate everything you and the staff are doing. I want to thank you also and everyone who is behind in continuing to pay the student workers. You have no idea how much this helps me and the rest of the student workers. Please continue to be safe..." - Compton College Student Worker

Thank you to all the employees who provided me with valuable input for that decision, as you know many of our students are struggling financially during COVID-19, and we must provide as much financial support as possible for our students during these times. Compton College students need our assistance now more than ever.

Please be safe and stay healthy, and enjoy spring break.

Sincerely,

Keith Curry, Ed.D.
